Shadow

Advanced_Style Inspired by the blog of fashion photographer Ari Seth Cohen, follows a group of seven New York women, aged 62 to 95, who have maintained a sense of style, despite their advanced ages.  These women include Lynn Dell Cohen (80), who runs a storied boutique, Ilona Royce Smithkin (93), an artist recognized by her colorful ensembles and iconic red eyelashes, and Joyce Carpati (80), who embodies elegance with her signature braid and pearls. With many older people being ignored by the fashion industry, these women challenge the conventional ideas about beauty, aging, and Western culture's increasing obsession with youth. Ari Seth Cohen began his blog “Advanced Style,” after noticing these stylish older women on the streets of New York City.  The success of the blog helped to raise the profile of many of these women, who find themselves part of photo shoots and fashion campaigns.  The film really helps to show that age is just a number and that beauty is forever. I wouldn't really call myself that much of a fashion aficionado, but I do appreciate these women for defying a stereotyped society that is fixated upon youth.  Advanced Style tries to say that aging can be a wonderful thing and that good fashion improves the environment for everybody.  All together, I can say that it was pretty enjoyable watching this eccentric group of women do their thing.  8 | LIKED IT Screenings:
