Here is the first trailer for the film adaptation of the 1993 Newberry Award-winning Young Adult novel The Giver by Lois Lowry. This was a book that I read myself (twice) when I was actually a young adult back in the mid-1990s. The film stars Jeff Bridges as the titular character, who teaches the young boy Jonas (Oculus’ Brenton Thwaites) about the true nature of the supposedly utopian world that they live in. Bridges also acts as producer on the film, which he has apparently been trying to develop ever since the novel was originally published. I admit that, based on the first trailer, the world of the film doesn’t look exactly like I pictured it in my head back when I read the novel. However, this is only a brief teaser trailer and I remain hopeful that this will be a faithful adaptation. The Giver will be released on August 15.

Sean Patrick Kelly is a self-described über-geek, who has been an avid film lover for all his life. He graduated from York University in 2010 with an honours B.A. in Cinema and Media Studies and he likes to believe he knows what he’s talking about when he writes about film (despite occasionally going on pointless rants).
