Sean Kelly

My Thoughts on X-Men: First Class

It's been a little over 11 years since X-Men became the first successful adaptation of a Marvel comic property and spawned a decade long craze in comic book films.

X-Men: First Class can be both described as a prequel and reboot to the original series.  For people who only know X-Men from the previous films, they would only really familiar with four of the X-Men in this film (plus one funny cameo).

The film focuses mainly on the back-stories of Charles Xavier and Magneto, played by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender in this film.  While it's essentially a new origin story (with a lot of training scenes), there is still a fair amount of action in the film, as the fledgling X-Men faces the threat of the evil Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon).

The film is definitely a return to form for the X-Men series and I would be interested in seeing further films with the first class of X-Men.

8/10

About Sean Kelly -

Sean Patrick Kelly is a self-described ├╝ber-geek, who has been an avid film lover for all his life. He graduated from York University in 2010 with an honours B.A. in Cinema and Media Studies and he likes to believe he knows what he’s talking about when he writes about film (despite occasionally going on pointless rants).
