Box Office Thoughts for the Weekend of January 9, 2008

After a break for the holidays, the daily columns return.

This week's top film marks the film time in a while that an older release tops the box office. Gran Torino, which went wide last weekend in its fifth week, was the top film with an estimated gross of $29M. Bride Wars opened in second place with an estimated $21.5M and the horror film The Unborn opened in third with and estimated $21.1M.

Last week's top film, Marley and Me, dropped to forth place with an estimated gross of $11.4M.

And that's the box office thoughts for this week.

Golden Globes Wrap-Up

This year's Golden Globes was full of surprises, including huge success for Slumdog Millionaire. Here is my wrap-up:

Best Picture - Drama
My Prediction: Frost/Nixon
Winner: Slumdog Millionaire
Final Thoughts: From winning the People's Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival to this, it has been a Cinderella Story for this film. This surprise win makes the Oscar race all the more interesting.

Best Picture - Musical or Comedy
My Prediction: Burn After Reading
Winner: Vicky Christina Barcelona
Final Thoughts: I really need to see that film.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama
My Prediction: Frank Langella
Winner: Mickey Rourke
Final Thoughts: Both were great performances and I am glad Rourke (my alternate prediction) won.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama
My Prediction:
Kristin Scott Thomas
Winner: Kate Winslet
Final Thoughts: Hands down, the most surprising win of the night.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
My Prediction: James Franco
Winner:
Colin Farrell
Final Thoughts: Another surprise win, since I thought Farrell and Brendan Gleeson would cancel each other out. I was wrong.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
My Prediction & Winner:
Sally Hawkins
Final Thoughts: Hawkins' win made me feel Happy-Go-Lucky.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
My Prediction & Winner: Heath Ledger
Final Thoughts: This posthumous award just makes one sadder about Ledger's death.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
My Prediction & Winner: Kate Winslet
Final Thoughts: Who would have thought that she would win BOTH acting awards?

Best Director - Motion Picture
My Prediction: Ron Howard
Winner: Danny Boyle
Final Thoughts: It was this moment I knew Slumdog was going to win.

Best Screenplay - Motion Picture
My Prediction: Frost/Nixon
Winner: Slumdog Millionaire
Final Thoughts: It was here, I sensed a sweep.

Best Original Score - Motion Picture
My Prediction & Winner: Slumdog Millionaire
Final Thoughts: This is probably the only prediction involving this film that I made.

Best Original Song - Motion Picture
My Prediction: Down to Earth
Winner: The Wrestler
Final Thoughts: Both deserving songs

Best Animated Film
My Prediction & Winner: Wall-E
Final Thoughts: I would have had a fit if it didn't win

Best Foreign Language Film
My Prediction:
I Loved You So Long
Winner: Letters Waltz With Bashir
Final Thoughts: It was going to be one or the other

In the end, Slumdog Millionaire's surprise sweep resulted in me only getting 5 out of 14 predictions. That film is now officially a top contender for the Oscars and I am looking forward to the announcment of the nominees.
