IMDb Presents Top Rated Films of the New Millenium

The Internet Movie Database has posted a list of the 15 top rated films since 2000. I thought that I would go through the list an provide my thoughts on each of the films.

15. Requiem for a Dream
I only saw the film once, but I do have to say that one viewing left an impression. The film is disturbing and intense and definitely deserves to be on this list.

14. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
This film has become one of my all-time favourites and I consider it the best work of both Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman.

13. Spirited Away
I haven’t yet seen the film, but this anime film currently holds the title of being the only traditionally cell-animated film to win the “Best Animated Film” Oscar.

12. The Pianist
After this won Best Director, I was willing to accept the fact that it would win Best Picture as well (something I personally confirmed after seeing the film), but then Chicago won instead.

11. The Lives of Others
This was a film I wanted to see, but never got the chance to see.

10. The Departed
Probably not Scorsese’s best, but it was still a very good film (and it deserved the Best Picture Oscar).

9. Amélie
This was another foreign film I never got a chance to see.

8. Wall-E
This will definitely go down as one of the best Pixar/Disney films. I doubt they will be able to top it.

7. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
I guess this is the lowest ranked of the series because nothing begins or ends.

6. Memento
This is my number two favourite film and I just love how well the film is edited (with the reverse-chronology in colour and the forward-chronology in black and white).

5. Up
Not sure if this film truly ranks higher than Wall-E.

4. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The one that began it all.

3. City of God
This is the third and final foreign film on this list that I have not seen.

2. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
Definitely the most epic of the series. However, I do think the Academy went a bit overboard with the clean sweep.

1. The Dark Knight
Hmmm….It was definitely a good film, which I ranked as my number two film from last year (behind The Wrestler). However, I don’t know I will go far enough and rank it my top film of the decade (especially since a lot of my top films have been released this decade).

Well, it’s definitely an interested list. However, it will be interesting to see if any of these films are still on such a list in ten years time.
