Box Office Thoughts for the Weekend of July 25, 2008

DarkKnightPosterWill Ferrel and Mulder and Scully were not enough to put an early end to The Dark Knight's reign. Here are the estimates:

  1. The Dark Knight – $75.6M
  2. Step Brothers – $30M
  3. Mamma Mia! – $17.9M
  4. The X-Files: I Want to Believe – $10.2M
  5. Journey to the Center of the Earth – $9.41M
  6. Hancock – $8.2M
  7. WALL·E – $6.35M
  8. Hellboy II: The Golden Army – $4.93M
  9. Space Chimps – $4.38M
  10. Wanted – $2.73M

In one of the fastest box office rises I've experienced, The Dark Knight added $75.6M during the weekend and now had a total of $314.2M making it nearly tied with Iron Man's $314.9M. At the film's current momentum, it is for sure going to officially become the year's top grosser within the week.

The continued success of The Dark Knight has eaten into the box office revenue of last weekend's new openings. The comedy Step Brothers opened in second with a decent $30M, however The X-Files: I Want to Believe opened in forth with only $10.2M. However, since X-Files only had a budget of $30M, it still has a chance of, at least, breaking even.

And that's the box office thoughts for this week.
